A fisherman in Cambodia is going to need a bigger boat after catching what researchers have identified as the largest-ever freshwater fish.
Moul Thun, 42, caught the giant stingray — which weighed in at 661 pounds and measured 13 feet in length — on June 13, according to a statement Monday by Wonders of the Mekong, a joint Cambodian-U.S. research project.

The fisherman contacted researchers the morning after the big catch.

The fish, whose name Boramy translates to “full moon” in Khmer, due to her round shape, is likely to survive, according to the scientists.
“Yeah, when you see a fish this size, especially in freshwater, it is hard to comprehend, so I think all of our team was stunned,” Wonders of the Mekong leader Zeb Hogan said in an online interview from the University of Nevada in Reno.
The title for the world’s largest-ever freshwater fish caught previously belonged to a 645-pound giant catfish caught in northern Thailand in 2005.
