Gangubai Kathiawadi, Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s film, has caused a stir as Gangubai’s family is unhappy about Gangubai’s portrayal in the Alia Bhatt-starrer movie. Bharti, her granddaughter, has accused the filmmakers defaming her family’s greed and stated that they cannot be believed. She also stated that the filmmakers never sought permission from the family before making the film or while writing the book.
She also said that her grandmother lived in Kamathipura. Did every woman who lived there become a prostitute then? My grandmother adopted four children there – two daughters, Shakuntala Ranjitkawi (Bharti’s mother), and Sushila Rededdy, and two sons, Babu Raoji Shah, and Rajinikanth Raoji Shah. Bharti stated that Gangubai’s family proudly narrates Gangubai’s stories, and that Gangubai worked tirelessly for Kamathipura’s sex workers throughout her life. She was shocked at the portrayal of her grandmother by Gangaubai Kathiawadi.
Gangubai’s relatives had filed a petition in 2021 against Gangubai Kathiawadi’s makers. A Mumbai court then summoned actor Alia Bhatt and filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali to the case. Bombay High Court denied the film’s release and issued an interim stay to the criminal defamation proceedings against its makers.
This case remains open for investigation. He said that notices had been sent to Hussain Zaidi and Bhansali, but they have not received any response. He stated that even though they had proven that Babu Raoji Shah was Gangubai’s child in Bombay High Court proceedings, no hearing has taken place.
Narendra, Gangubai’s lawyer in the case, stated that Gangubai and his entire family have been shocked since the trailer was released. He said Gangubai’s trailer portrayal is “completely incorrect, baseless and vulgar”. He added, “You’re a social activist and a prostitute.” It is not clear which family would approve. You made her [Gangubai] both a vamp, and a lady do.”
Further, the family lawyer stated that the fight started in 2020. Babu Raoji Shah discovered that a movie was being made about Gangubai’s life after seeing his mother’s promo photo.
Narendra also commented on the hardships the family has endured since the original promo was dropped. He said that the family had been hiding ever since then. They are moving out of their homes and into Borivali or Andheri. Family members have raised concerns about Gangubai’s portrayal and asked them if Gangubai was a prostitute or a social worker, as they claimed. The mental state of the family is not good. “No one can live in peace.”

Based on Hussain Zaidi’s book Mafia Queens of Mumbai : Stories of Women from the Ganglands, the film was made. Gangubai was allegedly betrayed by her husband and forced into prostitution, according to the book. She then became the owner and operator of a brothel located in Mumbai’s Kamathipura district. She is also well-known for her connections with politicians and criminals from the underworld.
