Virginia police are investigating a freak accident that resulted in the death of a baby girl.
A 10-month-old and her 35-year-old mother, of Hyattsville, Md., were in Woodbridge — about 30 miles northeast of Fredericksburg — to visit relatives when the day took a tragic turn.
After the mother placed her baby — neither of whom are being identified by police — in the back seat of her 2013 Toyota Highlander, unrestrained, she drove to a nearby garbage bin before picking up some of her relatives, Prince William County Police said. One of those relatives opened the back door, and the little girl fell out.
Though her mother went to check on her, she didn’t first put the car in park, causing the vehicle to roll over the baby.
The little girl sustained a serious head injury died later Sunday.
Though charges have not yet been filed, the investigation is still underway.
“At this time the investigation is still active so we will not be releasing any additional information unless criminal charges are obtained,” a spokesperson for Prince William County Police told the Daily News.
