Friday was the busiest air travel day in the U.S. since the beginning of the pandemic, according to federal statistics.
The Transportation Security Administration tracked 2.49 million passengers through U.S. airports on Friday as Americans attempted to make the most of the long weekend. The previous high of 2.46 million passengers was set on June 26.
In 2019, 2.35 million people traveled on the Friday before Independence Day, but the Fourth fell on a Thursday that year. This year’s Monday holiday led to even more travel.
Travelers were unfazed by hefty prices and potential cancellations. Airlines have struggled to keep up with surging demand this summer. Even Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg had a connecting flight canceled Friday.
Nearly 600 flights were canceled Friday and more than 6,800 were delayed.
In the past week, an average of 2.33 million people have flown through U.S. airports each day, nearly matching the 2.38 million average from this time of year in 2019. Travel on July 1 alone was up 13% from 2021.
