An 8-year-old boy who had been missing for over a week was found alive Saturday.
The boy, identified only as Joe, spent more than seven days in the sewers near his home in the German city of Oldenburg, police said.
Cops said Joe wandered away from home and down a rainwater drain on June 17, NBC News reported. He continued his harrowing journey through several pipes in the city about 80 miles west of Hamburg.
Police were told Joe had a learning disability, according to CNN. They surmised that he lost his sense of direction while in the sewer system.
At one point, the youngster took off all his clothes and sneaked through a pipe just two feet wide, NBC News reported. He was only found when a passer-by heard a noise from under a manhole cover on June 25.
Joe was hospitalized for hypothermia and dehydration, but did not suffer serious injuries during his week-long escapade, cops said.
“The police have ruled out third-party negligence at this point in time,” authorities said.
