Vermont’s ‘Suicide Six’ ski resort to change name

They’re shredding the name.

A Vermont ski resort known as “Suicide Six” announced Tuesday it would retire the moniker after this summer.

“Our resort team embraces the increasing awareness surrounding mental health and shares the growing concerns about the insensitive nature of the historical name. The feelings that the word ‘suicide’ evokes can have a significant impact on many in our community,” a statement on the resort’s website read.

“It is vital that the name better represents and celebrates what makes it a beloved and vibrant part of this community. Though some may find the change difficult, we stand by our conviction that this evolution is warranted for an iconic treasure and, more importantly, necessary to continue its rich history of inclusion and accessibility.”

The resort is in Pomfret, about 50 miles south of Montpelier, near the state’s border with New Hampshire.

The area is believed to be home to the first ski lift constructed in the U.S.

U.S. Skiing Hall of Fame honoree Wallace “Bunny” Bertram coined the name after the resort opened in 1936, but the resort said the new name will be announced soon.
