The boat of a man who disappeared from North Carolina seven months ago has washed ashore thousands of miles away in the Azores Islands.
The Azores are about 870 miles from Lisbon, Portugal. The boat was found on the small island of São Jorge, some 2,700 miles from where it was last seen.
Joseph Matthew Johnson, 44, a retired Army Special Forces Soldier hasn’t been seen since Nov. 22 when he left Federal Point Yacht Club in Carolina Beach on the boat. A friend who arrived in town for a fishing trip reported Johnson missing five days later.
The U.S. Coast Guard searched an area of about 7,500 square miles searching for Johnson but was unsuccessful and suspended the operation after 53 hours.
Carolina Beach Police Sgt. Colby Edens said that authorities in the Azores described the boat as covered in barnacles and algae, an indication it was capsized for some time.
