A Brazilian beauty queen who was crowned Miss Brazil United Continents in 2018 died Monday after complications stemming from a tonsil removal surgery, Brazilian media reported. She was 27.
Gleycy Correia, who was also crowned Miss Costa do Sol in 2018, had been in a coma for more than two months, after undergoing the routine operation on April 4.
Born in Macaé, a small coastal town about 120 miles northeast of Rio de Janeiro, Correia was an entrepreneur who specialized in permanent makeup and an outspoken Christian, who regularly posted about her business and her faith to her more than 53,000 followers on Instagram.
Her death was announced by Jak Abreu, the pastor of her church, who said on social media that, “God chose this day to collect our princess. We know that she will be greatly missed, but she will now be brightening the sky with her smile.”
Friends and fans of the former beauty queen celebrated the “humble, sweet friend” who was always “worried about the wellbeing of her parents, siblings, nephews and nieces.”
Facebook user Meire Moret wrote that even with all of her success, she was always the same grounded person, “always with the same smile and humility.”
“You might have left us, but your beautiful story will continue,” added Ana Cláudia Vedder.
The official Facebook account of Miss United Continents also expressed the organization’s “profound sadness” about her death.
Correia’s body was sent to the Forensic Medicine Institute of Macaé for an autopsy.
According to the Brazilian news portal G1, local authorities have determined the official cause of death to be “pneumonia; anoxic encephalopathy; cardiac arrest; hemorrhagic shock and internal bleeding.”
