First, the change in technology of sports relay broadcasting components based on the history of Korean broadcasting technology was studied. This is important in that, by analyzing the characteristics of periodical production in the perspective of producers in sports relay broadcasting, the history of related field is reconstructed. Second, it is the analysis of the components for causing changes in the relay 스포츠중계 components (relay technologies, video production techniques, graphic designs and hosts, producing methods). The major and minor causes that affect the sports relay broadcasting were studied. Third, to take a closer look at the change in the sports relay broadcasting components, the SBS TV professional baseball relay broadcasting program was analyzed. An in-depth analysis of the process of change in the relay broadcasting components that was widely used in sports relay broadcasting in content, format and production was carried out.
Therefore
In this study, existing research materials and reports regarding the sports relay broadcasting were collected and a literature study was conducted to study on the period division and the change factors. Also, in-depth interviews that were carried out with the experts shows the features of the Korean TV sports relay broadcasting and the change factors. The contents of the SBS TV professional baseball relay broadcasting programs were analyzed.
As a result
Following conclusions were derived. First, Korean sports relay broadcasting, on the basis of the professional baseball broadcasting, has been developing, largely, in the form of a three-stage evolutionary model: introductory stage, takeoff preparation stage (transition period), and competition development stage (takeoff period). Introductory stage is the terrestrial-centered relay period from the launch in 1982 to 1994. The takeoff preparation stage (transition period) is responsible for the year of 1995 in which the cables were introduced to 2007. The competition development stage is when all stadium relays were initiated and the roles of terrestrial and cables were clearly distinguished which was in 2008 to today (2013).
Second
Three main causes (technological cause, market structure cause, broadcasting regulation cause) were looked at for driving the changes in professional baseball relay broadcasting components. The experts have picked the market structure cause, the competition structure among the channels, as having the biggest influence on the change in components of sports relay broadcasting. Next, the technological cause called the development of relay technology and the broadcasting company’s continuous investment in raising the professional manpower followed. On the other hand, it was found that the restriction on broadcasting policy has affected the change of format in sports relay broadcasting partially, but it was not a significant cause. The market structure was picked as the main cause due to the competition between the media and the channels which led to the competitive development of technological investment and this seems to have affected the development and change in components of relay broadcasting.
In the introductory stage, the two broadcasting companies, current KBS and MBC, broadcasted without a specific competition, but with the launch of Seoul Broadcasting Station (SBS) in 1991, it changed to a three company’s competition structure. In takeoff preparation stage (transition period), Korea sports TV, a cable channel, began the professional baseball relay broadcasting in 1995.
This changed the three terrestrial broadcasting company’s competition structure to a role-distributing form of terrestrial broadcasting and cable TV gradually. With the reduction in numbers of terrestrial sports relay, the weight of importance in sports relay broadcasting was placed on to the sports professional channels including cables and satellite in this period. In the competition development stage, most of the games during the season were broadcasted by the sports professional channels (PP) and during the post-season the three terrestrial broadcasting companies took turns in relay broadcasting in role-distributing form.
The experts have assessed that, in producing the sports relay broadcasting; the influence of advertisers and sponsors doesn’t exist or is trivial. They also have suggested that, in producing the relay broadcasting, a consideration for sponsors is needed while recognizing the relationship between the producer and the sponsor as a cooperative relationship. In addition, the influence of leagues and teams on relay broadcasting production was found to be non-existing or trivial.
