An unidentified gunman fired into a car early Sunday morning in Houston, killing a 5-year-old and wounding an 8-year-old, according to police.
Witnesses reported shots fired in an apparent drive-by around 1 a.m. from a car traveling westbound, directed at a car driving north, Assistant Chief Chandra Hatcher said during a press conference. Two Black men were spotted in the car but it’s unclear how many fired.
Responding police found no witnesses or victims at the scene, but 15 minutes later, received calls from a nearby hospital about two children who had been shot.
The 8-year-old is expected to recover.
The children’s mother was driving and was stopped at a light when the gunfire broke out, according to officials. She immediately drove them to the hospital after realizing they had been hit.
It’s unclear if the shooting was targeted, Hatcher said.
Police are currently looking for surveillance footage in the area and urged anyone with information to come forward.
